The Thames Estuary Airport Company Limited was formed for the specific purpose of developing the optimal solution to the increasing, and now critical problem of, UK airport runway capacity. The Company's proposal for such a solution is for the creation of a new Hub Airport on an artificial island in the Thames Estuary.
The Thames Estuary Airport Company Limited has received a firm commitment for financial backing to fund the construction of the entire project, including associated rail and road infrastructure.
The purpose of the development is to provide the United Kingdom with an integrated facility which will meet all of the future demands of the air transport industry through the most advanced technology.
One of the principal features of a Thames estuarial airport is that it imposes the least environmental impact and creates the greatest benefits, when compared with any alternative proposal. Furthermore, the Thames Estuary Airport Company as part of its development policy is committed to support and contribute to mitigation technology, to safeguard and enhance the environment.
Safety is an important aspect. All initial take off and final approach landing routes are over water. The problem of noise pollution is virtually eliminated.
The project will, directly and indirectly, create between 100,000 and 200,000 jobs.
Thames Estuary Airport Company will provide funding for the building of up to 80,000 new dwellings in the Thames Gateway area (part of the UK Government confirmed requirement of 366,000 to be completed within the area by 2011) together with the associated infrastructure of schools, shopping, medical care and leisure facilities, etc., with support services and associated industries (seemingly foregone or overseen by recent similar Government new-build programs).
Further financial commitments made to the Thames Estuary Airport Company and now under consideration are intended to provide the funding of a number of associated transport related projects together with an allowance for substantial investment in the airline industry. This investment, together with the new airport and associated projects, will be the largest investment from the private sector ever made into a public infrastructure project. In addition to solving a number of the problems which currently adversely affect both the UK's air transport industry and those who live adjacent to airports and under busy flight paths, it will provide significant advantages for the future of the British economy generally whilst also creating new employment.
